NEXUS in Cape Town, South Africa for International Symposium on FishCRIME (October 2015)

CAPE TOWN, 12-13 October 2015 – NEXUS joined nearly 200 delegates from 31 countries in Cape Town, South Africa to participate in the inaugural International Symposium on FishCRIME. NEXUS Institute’s Senior Researcher Rebecca Surtees presented on human trafficking for fishing, based on NEXUS’ extensive research on this understudied form of trafficking. Her presentation focused on how human trafficking takes place within the fishing industry, as well as the current failure to identify and assist trafficked fishers. A copy of the NEXUS presentation is available for download from FishCRIME.

The Symposium provided an opportunity for professionals from different fields of expertise (fisheries experts, trafficking experts, police, judiciary, customs, port authorities and labor inspectors) to discuss challenges and cooperation in the fishing sector and to explore future strategies for change. A record of the presentations and discussions is available from FishCRIME here.
